Frequently Asked Questions

If your CCTV system is not functioning correctly, a simple repair might be the solution to get your cameras up and running again. However, it’s important that repairs are undertaken by a qualified engineer with an understanding of how closed-circuit television systems operate.

If you’re unsure of what you’re doing, you could risk invalidating any existing warranty on your CCTV camera or further damaging the device beyond repair. CCTV cameras can be repaired (depending on the damage), but it’s a good idea to leave any repairs to a CCTV expert with the qualifications to undertake any required work.

There are lots of ways to troubleshoot why your CCTV camera has stopped working. Some of the most common factors include insufficient power supply, an unstable video network, issues with wiring, hardware concerns (including components within the camera or monitor), inefficient camera software, or in the case of WiFi cameras, IP address conflicts.

The first port of call is to check all power connections and cables. Make sure each of these is plugged in and undamaged. If your CCTV camera has an external power brick, ensure that it is fully PAT-tested and functional. If none of these appears to be causing an issue, it may be time to contact a qualified CCTV engineer to troubleshoot further.

If your CCTV camera is non-functional, your first step is to reboot the device. When you reboot your CCTV camera, this will cause the cache to flush and will calibrate settings/revise connections. To do so, directly unplug your camera from its power supply. You should wait a few seconds before plugging it back in and allowing it to reboot.

If this fixes the issue, great! If not, it’s time to call in an expert to assess the situation. Whether your CCTV system is there to protect your business or your home, it’s important to always have the correct security systems in place to deter would-be intruders and capture them for the purposes of building a prosecution against them.

A CCTV camera is only as good as the upkeep and maintenance it receives. If you take the time to maintain and service your CCTV surveillance system every few months, it could save you a lot of time, hassle and money in the future.

If you’re uncertain about how to maintain your system, or simply don’t have the time, you might find it helpful to outsource your CCTV maintenance to a third party. This will ensure that your CCTV cameras are always working in perfect condition.

If your CCTV camera suddenly stops working, you’ll first need to troubleshoot the problem. We recommend checking all power connections and cables first, ensuring each is undamaged and plugged in. If everything seems in order, try rebooting your camera by turning it off and on again at the power source. This will allow the system’s cache to flush and will allow a recalibration of the original settings. Should this fail to solve the issue, you might want to contact a qualified CCTV engineer to identify where the problem lies and to get the issue repaired as quickly as possible.

There are lots of reasons why CCTV systems suddenly stop working. Some of the most common issues include power problems, unstable network connections, wiring issues, hardware failures, software issues and IP address conflicts.

While it can be easy to diagnose issues pertaining to insufficient power supply, you may require an engineer to identify more complex CCTV problems. A qualified CCTV specialist will be able to quickly and easily repair any issues, which will save you time and ensure that your CCTV is back up and running as soon as possible.

Routine maintenance is important to ensure that your CCTV system remains functioning at all times. A good CCTV system is invaluable when it comes to deterring would-be intruders or capturing their image for the purposes of prosecution.

In general, we recommend a routine CCTV check once every month, whereby you ensure all cables and power points are functioning as they should, and that all cameras are providing clear footage of the areas they are supposed to cover. In addition to this, we recommend a deeper assessment and review of your CCTV requirements at least once every year, to ensure that your property receives the best possible protection from your closed-circuit system.

A standard CCTV system service will include a visual inspection of the area, including the identification of any environmental conditions which could adversely affect your camera in the future. For exterior areas, things like trees, bushes and shrubs can obscure the view of the camera, and during a service, we can identify these as such.

In addition to this, a CCTV service should include checking/maintenance of all equipment, including the integrity of the cabling. Software should also be checked, with CCTV date and time settings monitored for accuracy.

One of the most common problems with CCTV is a disconnected wire or knot in a cable so make sure to check all your leads including power plugs. This is very quick to do and ensures it is not an easily fixed issue before you waste time trying to fix your system. It could also simply be that the network is down. You can also use your phone to find out the IP address of the system and therefore test its strength. If this works but you still can’t connect, it may be a matter of incorrect login details which you can rectify using the system’s user manual. You could also try rebooting or factory resetting the system if you are still having trouble.

This can vary depending on the model of the camera, and you will likely find more specific information in the user manual of your security system. You can try finding this online if you don’t have it with you. However, one thing to check for includes a reset button which can be held down for about a minute with the system being powered down after 30 seconds. Alternatively, there may be a small hole on the back of the camera into which you can insert a reboot key to get your system restarted.

If this occurs when you first turn on your new CCTV system, a no signal sign could mean that the installation or even the design of the system is incorrect and will need to be rectified. It could be as simple as a power problem or an issue with the wiring so you should try checking this. Alternatively, it may be the fault of the Wi-Fi connection. If this is repeatedly a problem, you could try a wifi booster or simply upgrade your connection.

As with all technology, your CCTV system could be prone to errors and damage. Many electronics have a relatively short lifespan but if you want to avoid spending out prematurely, it is important to maintain your system properly – especially where external cameras are used (cameras are subject to weather erosion). Looking after your wires, cameras and connections will ensure you can use your system for as long as possible and avoid it breaking down unexpectedly and therefore leaving you with no protection and a heavy replacement or repair cost.

If you need a security system, you will want to make sure you can trust it to run correctly and catch any video it needs to. When it comes to setting up a reliable and consistently running CCTV system, there are five things you will need to pay attention to getting right. The main component is the camera or cameras themselves. As well as this, you need to ensure you invest in good-quality monitors, cables, video recorders and data storage. All five of these elements are essential to a properly functioning system.

Maintain or Fix? The Crucial Difference When Looking After Your CCTV Cameras

When you get a new CCTV system installed, the chances are very good you won’t be thinking about repairing or maintaining it. After all, it’s newly-installed, and it should be in fine working order.

However, this doesn’t mean it will always remain that way. A storm could damage some of the equipment or cameras. A build-up of dirt could lead to a poor image. Wear and tear is likely to occur over time, too.

This brings up two areas worth thinking about – maintenance and repair. Should you invest in the regular maintenance of your CCTV system, or simply repair it whenever it is necessary?

Fixing issues means there is downtime before a solution is found

This might mean part of your CCTV system isn’t working as it should. It might also mean none of it works, particularly if there is an issue with the power supply, for example. That leaves you unprotected until the issue is resolved.

A CCTV system can only do its job if it is working properly. Even if a fast repair is possible, there will still be some time when your property is unprotected, in part or in full. Would you be happy with that situation, especially given you have invested in CCTV to provide security to start with?

Regular maintenance means there is far less chance of faults causing issues

While there are no guarantees, there is a much smaller chance you will run into any issues with your CCTV system if you invest in ongoing maintenance services. These should include proper cleaning of each camera, and all other parts of the system. Wear and tear can easily occur to exterior cameras, and regular maintenance services will ensure any such wear is seen and immediately rectified.

As such, the maintenance could prevent repairs from ever being needed. Problems will be spotted in the early stages, before they get a chance to cause a breakdown of one or more cameras, or another part of the system.

Which is the best approach?

It’s clear that maintenance is the best way to prevent the odds of breakdowns and other issues going against you. Your CCTV system is there to protect you. The only way it can do that is if it is in full working order. Regular maintenance will help make sure that is just what you experience.
