How can I watch CCTV footage on my computer?

By Jonathan Ratcliffe

When you're capturing footage from CCTV cameras outside your home or business, it's comforting to know that you can access the footage at all times if desired, but is it possible to do this on your own?

Most at-home and business CCTV systems allow you to view your security camera footage yourself via your own device, whether its a smartphone, tablet or laptop. In order to do this, however, you’ll need to have access to a fast broadband connection in order to install the appropriate security camera viewing apps and view your CCTV footage online.

Opt for the player offered by your seller

There are many third-party apps that you can install in order to view your footage, but often, the best course of action is to choose the security camera player offered by the seller of your CCTV camera. This way, you can ensure that you are using a compatible system that provides you with advanced features without you having to pay any additional fees. Often, this software is both customisable and free and can be downloaded via your seller’s official website, so make sure you ask your provider about the service they offer.

How to access your footage

Once you’ve downloaded the appropriate app, all you need to do is to log in to the application and select the location of the camera and the date and time of the footage that you want to view.

You can store the footage on various different mediums, including:

The Cloud
SD card
FTP server
DVR/NVR
