If you’re wondering how to get a CCTV licence then the first thing to consider is whether you actually need one or not. If you are using CCTV for your own use on a domestic property then no licence is required.

However, if you are undertaking public space surveillance by CCTV and you are operating commercially, then you will to apply to the SIA (Security Industry Authority) for a licence, unless your employer or company has been given an exemption under the Private Security Industry Act 2001. If not, you may be committing a criminal offence and could face prosecution. You can check whether you may be exempt by reading Section 4.4 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

Cost and Application

The cost of a licence is £220 and this is for a three year licence. If more than one licence is required, then a 50% discount is available for subsequent additional licences. For detailed guidance on how to apply for a CCTV Licence, see the SIA website page ‘Apply For A Licence’. Here you will need to create an account and you can then submit your application online.
