In a word Yes – however it’s not as simple as that. UK businesses who operate CCTV systems have to abide by the Data Protection Act 1998 – this means that you have a right to request CCTV footage.

BUT: and here is the problem – it’s not always so easy to find out who operates the CCTV camera. Many systems will have warning signs which will give you a name and address of the owner of the system. But, often this is not clear, and many small businesses might not have any procedure in place to actually take the footage from the recorder and provide it in a format you can use.

So in a nutshell, you can, see the guide – but smaller businesses many not be physically able to give you the CCTV footage you require.
